HTC Wizard / Windows Mobile Tips

Having been a keen user of the HTC Wizard (or MDA Vario) I thought I’d post up a collection of useful tips and answers to frequently asked questions. There are plenty of forums on the net that provide the same information but i tend to find a lot of them talk double dutch and this just confuses newbies. Hope this helps.

I will update as and when with more tips.

Q - When i try to switch between input methods using the menu at the bottom of the screen, it can take 5-10 seconds to appear, how can i stop this?

A - This is caused by a couple of things but the main culprit seems to be Microsoft Voice Command. To fix this there are two options. Using a program like spb backup or sktools, backup your registry and then restore it. You will need to reboot and it may ask you to set a password/pin (don’t worry you can turn this off again) but when you have finished the reboot it should have returned the input menu to normal. If this didn’t work you can try using the freeware utility SmartSkey, it contains an option that deletes a problem notification in the phones notification queue. See smartsky readme file for details.

Q - How do I SIM unlock my phone to any network

A - You have two options you can do it yourself for free by using a program called lokiwiz available on the xda-developers.com site. It is fairly straightforward to use but some people have hit a few problems. If you’d rather take the easier approach you can use imei-check.co.uk’s site to unlock your phone. This will cost you money but they will also CID unlock your phone too (Which allows flashing of custom ROMs.)

QHow can I backup my phone?

A - There are a couple of tools you can use to do this. I would recommend either SPB Backup or SKTools. SPB Backup is a dedicated backup program which will backup all of your phone to a self extracting file which you can run to reset your phone back to the point of the backup. SKTools is a collection of tools including cleanup tweaking and of course the backup. Neither program is free but will save your bacon should you install a program which makes your phone unstable. Text messages are not backed up by these programs sometimes. For this i recommend PIMBackup 2.5 which is available on the xda-developers forum.

QWhat is a custom ROM? and do i need one?

A - A custom ROM is a tweaked operating system/interface for your phone. Tweaks might include common fixes to the operating system or new additions such as VoIP. One of the main reasons for custom roms on the HTC Wizard is because there was never a Windows Mobile 6 release for the HTC Wizard. There are a huge number to choose from so you would be wise to read up on xda-developers .

If you just use your phone for calls and dont have any problems with the software that was included with the phone then you probably wont want to flash a custom rom, however if you want to make the most of your phone then an upgrade is well worth the effort.
