can you go into Settings->Mail Contacts & Calendars and into your gmail account, then into outgoing server, then click smtp.gmail.com which should be your primary server, this should tell you what settings it is using, can you post them here, apart from obviously the username and password!

What about incomming is that working?

Does internet work in safari? depends wether you may have a general problem or its just linked to gmail itself. If you post back some more info i'll see if i can help.

Ok if you can try the following. (Before you start make a note of your current settings just incase these dont work, obviously i cant garuntee these will work but my researched as pointed me at he below)

APN: goto.virginmobile.uk
Username: user
Password (blank)
Visual Voicemail â€“ Not currently supported on Virgin Mobile

Password: N/A

MMS

APN: goto.virginmobile.uk
Username: (user
Password: (blank)
MMSC: http://mms.virginmobile.co.uk:8002
MMS Proxy: 193.30.166.001:8080
MMS Max Message Size: 307200
MMS UA Prof URL: (blank)

You'll need to make sure Virgin have MMS switched on on your account.

If you can give these a go and let me know how you get on, if they work i'll add them to the main post above.

why can’t I send and receive emails on my o2 iphone? it use to work fine but recently it keeps saying ‘the connection to the outgoing server “smtp.gmail.com” failed. Additional outgoing Mail Servers can be configured in Settings:Mail, contacts and calendars.’ I have tried all of these! please advice much appreciated ??

everything else functions perfectly. 3G, calls, SMS, abd MMS worked until approx a week ago.
the phone is officially unlocked and been running on a Â£15 3 contract sim for about 2 months.

Not really that I can think of. What unlock are you using and do you
know what baseband your phone is running?

Also have you tried any other pay and go sims to see if they have
similar problems?

Hello i just unlocked an iphone and i have put a 3 pay as you go sim card in and my signal keeps dropping, sometimes i get a few bars of signal then it will randomly drop to nothing. Is there anything i should put in the phones settings cheers.

been using these settings for 3 UK (officially unlocked 3GS) for a few months with no issues
now it gets to almost sent on the bar and says “Message send failure” after a few minutes
anyone know why?

if the mms settings are all fill in on the cellular data network page then you should get the icon there. Have you powered off and back on since inputting the settings?

What firmware version are you running there and which unlock (ultrasn0w/blacksn0w)
