My 2¢ on 3D Cinema

It wont have escaped anyone’s attention a that 3D is big news again, with the big Hollywood studios now filming their big budget films with special 3D cameras & TV manufacturers beavering away on their latest models to bring a better 3D experience to the home theatre.

But is it all its cracked up to be?

This weekend gone I went to see the new Tim Burton – Alice in Wonderland film (which is fantastic by the way! :) ) in 3D at The Picture House in Uckfield which is a pretty small cinema but that’s a good thing, less people less noise and the screen feels a lot bigger.

This was my 3D experience and I was a little skeptical that the 3D would be that good as it was based on wearing silly glasses, but I’m happy to say I was pleasantly surprised with the experience.  The effect of depth is like nothing I’ve experience before with glasses but I think that sometimes things are “thrown out of the screen” for the sake of it and of all the effects i feel this works the least, it looks silly and seemed hard for my eyes to focus on. Hopefully this will settle down as time goes on and the technology is more widespread.

Readers in the UK might well have seen Channel 4′s 3D week where they gave away free glasses in the supermarkets ready for a week of special broadcasts displayed in the two tone purple and orange effect. The effect wasn’t quite as good as in the cinema, but the feeling of depth was still there, but the experience is ruined by the crazy colours.

Its a big shame that glasses are required right now because sitting there with a couple of hours with them on hurts and if they think 3D will be coming into the home they’ll need to find a way around it or build some more comfortable glasses.

What do you think of 3D, what have you seen in 3D and did it add anything for you?

  • I still haven't seen this in 3D but have heard the same thing about it's really the depth that is impressive. The glasses are still the real drawback and I can see that this will be the reason it might still not take off. I did go to a convention (a few years back) and they had TVs with special grills in them so that it actually 3Ds it for you - NO GLASSES. It was incredible as you would just walk past and suddenly see a 3D can of coke spinning.

Of course you still need to be at 15 degree angles to see it, and you need to be able to see from both eyes. Might be the future though....

I commented on a similar article on CMoz's blog at the end of last week.

I've never found the format comfortable to watch - it sends my eyes into a painful spasm and I can't focus on anything. Bearing in mind that I haven't seen any of the newer stuff, I don't know if this will still be the same.

I almost feel as if this is an advance in technology for the sake of an advance. Rather than make us all wear glasses, wouldn't it be easier to have some kind of screen in front of the cinema screen that provides the glasses functionality?
  • interesting idea but i think the depth effect comes from the closeness of the lenses to the face, at least thats I reckon it must work
  • Haven't seen Alice yet but it's on the list. Watched Avatar in 3D and once through the initial 10 - 15 minutes of my eyes/ears/balance all getting synced up it was amazing.

I've kinda with you on the whole glasses issue though. MrsC found them very uncomfortable over normal glasses and I dislike having my peripheral vision destroyed by big blocky frames at the best of times.

Must admit I'm still not convinced on 3D television - yet but for some movies it will really enhance the picture.

Me - well I'm just waiting for 3D first person shooters. Modern Warfare in 3D - yes please.
  • Avatar would have been good to see, but our cinema only runs 3D a short time it seems.

I must get modern warfare sometime, i dont often have the spare cash to spend on games but trying to avoid all my games being FPS! :)

I hear that Nintendo are bringing out a new portable with 3D but not using glasses, will be interesting.
